We open our door to refugees because it is the right thing to do. Because we believe that these same strangers would open their door to us in our time of need. https://t.co/8XD5aYYZTW

Let’s hope someone is listening. It’s in no one’s interest to have commercial boats losing time+money waiting to be given a safe port for rescued passengers https://t.co/F9np5hxLUG

@AdelReyhani @menocchino @JFCrisp Ok, now I understand better what you are saying, I disagree. To take the word 'migrants' so literally+all-encompassing is to ignore real world complexities/realities & arbitrary

@AdelReyhani @menocchino @JFCrisp ok well that approach is taking the issue to a very abstract and semantic level. in that case, where you draw the line on who is and isn't a migrant is arbitrary. Why stop at crossing national borders?

@chaipatel0 @MinnieRahman where did the video say refugees are 'more deserving'? They are simply a different group, with different rights, and operating under a different legal structure. to say otherwise in insincere. Doesn't mean migrants don't have other rights+protections, but not the same

@AdelReyhani @menocchino @JFCrisp Not really. Of course refugees can be more than 'only refugees'. They can be a refugee AND a migrant. But one is distinct from the other

@MinnieRahman Seen this said a lot, but where is evidence that defending refugees' rights as a group separate from migrants harms the latter? Yes 'refugees can become migrants', but they remain refugees. Maybe they become both a refugee+a migrant, but that reinforces that the 2 are different

A new approach is needed in Libya. - Immediate release of all detainees in detention centres - Urgently evacuate refugees out of Libya to safety - An end to the detention of people after they have been rescued at sea We cannot allow a tragedy like Tajoura to happen again https://t.co/fEbjJcMUsC

@AdelReyhani @JFCrisp in this case the words matter greatly, not because of their conceptual importance, but because of the legal implications they have, within real-life legal structures.

2 weeks ago, 50+ refugees died after an airstrike in Tajoura Detention Centre UNHCR evacuated the survivors to safety. The centre should have been closed. V. worrying reports of it being refilled. Must stop. Great risk of another tragedy if this centre is put back into action
