This is scary. 9 of 10 warmest years on record have occurred since 2005 Greenhouse gases have skyrocketed to levels not seen in 800,000+ years. More people are likely to be forced to flee their homes in future as a result of the impact of climate change https://t.co/j3kD5tXzpY

In many parts of the world, the debate around refugees has become toxic. We have to fight to protect the rights of refugees, +not allow them to be eroded by conflating them with the broader term ‘migrants’. Here’s the difference https://t.co/tBvrMgnGt4

@rgowans @ankiebroekers @CCastaner @dr_micfarr @JosepBorrellF @NatashaBertaud @MajaEUspox @remcovvd @AndiScheuer @LindaTeuteberg @MiRo_SPD This gives a dishonest picture of the reality. Those 3,905 people have been brought to detention centres in Libya, where they face new dangers. Cannot be considered a rescue if they are brought back to detention centres.

Good that they are saved from the dangers of the sea. But until they are also free from the dangers of the detention centres, we cannot use the word ‘rescued’ https://t.co/oiJz1oOb69

@FiskMann1 @Refugees @RefugeesChief States are obliged to rescue people in distress in its waters. The imp Q is what happens next. No detention, human rights upheld. Better if the rescue if by another boat with no return to Libya fullstop, but rescue+return to Libya by coast guard is better than no rescue at all.

@sallyhayd @guardian @IrishTimes @nytimes @melissarfleming Conditional on guarantees that no one is returned to detention AND minimum standards of human rights are upheld

@sallyhayd @guardian @IrishTimes @nytimes @melissarfleming Worth pointing out that there are already 50,000 refugees and asylum-seekers who live in Libya not in detention centres. For released detainees, we re ready to provide support through open centres like the GDF or through community programmes
