The status quo cannot continue. We cannot ignore that boat journeys are becoming more and more deadly. This year, 1 person has died on the route from Libya to Europe for every 6 people that have reached European shores. Shocking rate of death, we cannot turn a blind eye

If estimated figures are correct, this is the largest loss of life on the central Med in 2019. A reminder, if it was needed, that there MUST be a shift in approach to the Mediterranean situation. Urgent need to save lives at sea. https://t.co/wTl7Thwzru

Terrible news. Reports coming in of large shipwreck off the coast of Libya. Some 150 survivors understood to have been saved, returned to Libya. One of survivors reports that a large group died at sea, estimates could be around 150. Details still coming in.

4,000+ people have been returned to Libya after being intercepted by Libyan Coast Guard in 2019 Many are trapped inside detention centres close to the ongoing violence. They MUST be released+no one else taken to detention after being intercepted at sea https://t.co/HUEutpb5J6

Horrific news of another 38 people being taken to Tajoura after being intercepted by the Libyan Coast Guard. No one should be returned to Libya, ESPECIALLY not to detention centres. On 3 July, 50+ people in Tajoura died. How many more lives need to be lost before it is closed?
