This idea seems very popular in some circles, of an NGO 'pull factor'. Suits a certain narrative but has little foundation in reality. Earlier this year there were NO NGOs operating search & rescue, and departures from Libya increased. War & violence are the PUSH factor. https://t.co/5DEsFEUXDc

@JanneV10 No, the law of the sea says they should be taken to an appropriate safe port. Libya is not a safe port and no one should be returned there.

@JanneV10 I’d suggest that it’s misleading to say that people intercepted at sea and taken to awful conditions in detention centres are in any way ‘rescued’.
