UNHCR & @IOM have no power to prevent people from being taken to detention after they’re taken off the boats. We do not run the centres. Our access to them is limited. Our teams do our best to provide aid & healthcare during visits, & to evacuate as many as possible, ideally all

Thank you to the Maltese Arned Forces who last night rescued 85 people from a wooden (!) boat. Lives that may otherwise have been lost. New routes appear to be emerging, needing broader (stronger) search and rescue capacity

This latest incident is the highest loss of life since some 117 died or went missing in mid-January. In the first four months of this year, one person has died on the central Mediterranean for every three that have reached European shores after departing from Libya.
