@Caro50886110 No NGO has said that. & you are making too many assumptions there. If what you’re saying is true, how would explain the departure of many boats at the start of the year when there were NO NGO boats? Pull factor is neglible when you look at what people are leaving behind.

@Caro50886110 Yes people should be evacuated from detention centres. But we cannot ignore the plight of those who do risk these dangerous. & they risk them out of desperation. No one attempts a potentially fatal sea journey unless they feel the risks are greater on the land than the water.

@Caro50886110 Over the last few years, NGO boats have saved countless lives & prevented many tragedies. They should be praised for that at a time when there is not enough Search & Rescue capacity on the central Med.

@Caro50886110 Where has UNHCR does this? UNHCR has made repeated calls for more efforts to dismantle smuggler & criminal networks that profit off people's despair. Demand for these routes cannot be addressed while Libya's security is volatile, but much more should be done to stop the supply.

36 people have been rescued by the Italian Navy in international waters. Previous European Court case V Hersi applies here. Return to Libya would constitute refoulement, a violation of international law, and MUST be avoided at all costs.

Deeply concerning reports of some 214 people being intercepted & returned to Libya last night. There can be no 'rescue' if people are being taken back to nightmarish detention centres & an increasingly volatile security situation.
