Horrible, horrible news emerging of a shipwreck off the coast of Tunisia. If reports are true, some 70 people have lost their lives. Thoughts & prayers with families of the victims. A tragedy that never should have happened.

Welcome news: People rescued day on central Med by Italian Navy+Mare Jonio will dock in Sicily. Right & humane decision. Returning people to Libya would have placed their lives in real danger. Other countries must now match Italy's gesture with evacuations out of Tripoli. https://t.co/vbB453F1mY

@tamhimo I'm not sure I fully understand what you are saying. We are not present at sea and have no role in coordination of rescues. Our staff provide assistance at disembarkation points once they are back on land.

@tamhimo I'm sorry, being returned to a detention centre in Libya is nothing to celebrate, and certainly not a rescue. Important that lives in distress at sea, but they have been taken out of the frying pan and in to the fire
