NGO boats play a crucial role in saving lives on the Mediterranean. If people are in distress, nearby vessels capable of saving their lives should come to their assistance. Saving lives at sea is a humanitarian obligation, shouldn’t be used for political point-scoring. https://t.co/oqAFWRVwWh

@matteosalvinimi No where in Libya, let alone Tripoli, can be considered to be a port of safety. Heavy clashes are ongoing, while refugees are detained in dire conditions. Tripoli is not safe for any returns, no one should be returned there!

.@seawatch_intl was right not to return people to Libya. No refugee rescued on the Mediterranean should be returned to Libya at this time. We cannot return people to detention centres where they face nighmarish conditions, human rights abuses + are at risk of the clashes https://t.co/qY89RPwQeD

You cannot criminalise rescue at sea. You cannot fine or punish shipmasters for saving lives. Not only would it be entirely inhumane, it would be illegal. Here's UNHCR and @IMOHQ's guide to rescue at sea https://t.co/zXMhTqXA2V

There is no alternative at this time. The detention centres but be shut, and refugees held inside evacuated to safe locations, Dire conditions, widespread reports of human rights violations & clashes nearby. Not safe! https://t.co/1rXSMxTgOm

Important gesture from Uganda keeping an open border with DRC. Could be a vital lifeline for @refugees fleeing violence. UNHCR is supporting efforts to contain the spread any further, alongside great work of @WHO & @DianaAtwine's Ug Ministry of Health https://t.co/Semx1fvdPY

There is still time. We urge the Italian Parliament + Government to reconsider this law and instead put people's lives and refugee protection as the focus. https://t.co/peBrMEbBWJ

No boat should be penalised for refusing to return people to Libya. Libya has no safe port. No one should be returned there. https://t.co/peBrMEbBWJ
