@emmevilla @jessgerken @AdelReyhani @lillomontalto @Refugees @euronewsit Yes, that's right, it could have been expressed more clearly on my part. It is a *should* and not a *must*, but of course the rights afforded to asylum-seekers, such as non-refoulement, cannot be invoked if an asylum claim is not made.

@WilliamMeeuw @openarms_fund How do you know they are young male migrants? They've barely stepped foot on dry land. And according to Open Arms are from refugee-producing countries. So this sounds like conjecture on your part. The number is for 2019. The latest figure for the year is 43,105.

@shatzomer @lillomontalto @Refugees @euronewsit @emmevilla This is also true, but the two statements are not mutually exclusive?

The 'victory' here is that people can receive humanitarian aid are no longer stranded at sea. That it took this long+caused so much political conflict is very regrettable. We need a political compromise so boats can dock quickly. And Ocean Viking remains at sea with rescued ppl https://t.co/ppiWIvpzQn

@lillomontalto @Refugees @euronewsit @emmevilla This is the requirements of int'l refugee law. A person should apply for asylum in the territory they are in. You cannot withhold your asylum claim in the hopes of getting a better offer elsewhere. Resettlement exists but only for the most vulnerable as available places are few.

Spain set to send navy vessel to pick up rescued passengers onboard Open Arms. Hopefully this will bring a positive end to the situation and they can receive the assistance they need. https://t.co/aJSGFqdxEg

After more than 18 days at sea, there needs to be a swift resolution. We cannot leave people in need of humanitarian assistance at sea for days on end. State have expressed willingness to receive the rescued passengers. They must now be brought to dry land and safety. https://t.co/GiYCIdAmOO
