@cathalmalone Yes fair enough, I meant to express is in practise, if some1 is in a State irregularly+doesn’t make an asylum claim (not excluding other possibilities), they are at risk of being deported. That is the essence. I didn’t take enough account for the finer comxplexities. Apologies.

To clarify, to lodge an asylum claim, you need to be in the territory of the State to which you are applying. You are not compelled to apply. But you lack the protections afforded to a/s if you don’t.

@JFCrisp @lillomontalto @Refugees @euronewsit @emmevilla clarity on whether we are talking about 'should' seek asylum to get protection and a person being compelled to, the context (land/post-disembarkation/sea) + what are the consequences of not lodging an asylum claim in terms of protections lost. Twitter perhaps not best for this!

The message is that there is an increasing misconception amongst some refugees and a/s of a ‘right to resettlement’ to Europe, US, Canada+they’re being given false hope by those who tell them there is
