12. Things in Libya are getting worse. Agreement on this cannot come soon enough Europe was built on principles of peace, compassion+solidarity. Turning away from people crying out for help would be to abandon those core values when they're needed most.

11. We also need to look at WHY people move. Greater efforts are needed to broker peace in conflicts in East and West Africa. Strategic development support+help with strengthening asylum systems are needed for neighbouring countries.

8. A regional approach to disembarking rescued people is needed. So we never see a repeat of having boats stranded at sea, for days on end, with nowhere granting permission to dock. Responsibility should then be shared amongst States for hosting them afterwards.

7. Addressing this situation is a question of political will. The first priority has to be saving lives. This means increasing search and rescue capacity at sea, and the closure of the detention centres in Libya

9. Mediterranean States have been at the forefront of receiving sea arrivals over the last few years, + have taken disproportionate responsibility. European States should show solidarity with them, + agree to take their fair share of rescued people in a relocation mechanism

6. People are becoming more scared+desperate by the day, pushing them into the hands of smugglers+traffickers, who offer the promise of reaching Europe but provide flimsy, unseaworthy dinghies. Some attempt the journey multiple times.

5. 5,300 refugees+migrants are being held in detention centres, many at risk of being caught up in the hostilities. In July, more than 50 detainees lost their lives after an airstrike hit Tajoura detention centre. Many others face daily human rights abuses.

4. Since April, things in Libya have gone from bad to worse. Fighting between Government and rebel forces has intensified, forcing more than 128,000 people to become internally displaced. 50,000 refugees are also living in Libya, mostly from Syria, Sudan and Eritrea.

3. The vast majority of those deaths, around 70%, are on the Central Mediterranean. In other words on the crossing from Libya to Europe. A recent arrival in Lampedusa told our staff "We were terrified. But we were coming from hell - we were not afraid to die."
