Some of those on board are also likely to have been refugees or others needing international protection. Violence across the Sahel has forced many to flee their homes. https://t.co/feuVOcrwGv

More than 220,000 stateless people have acquired nationality in the last five years. Midway through UNHCR's #Ibelong campaign, we are at a critical point. Millions of people remain stateless. @Shabia_M on why it's so important to stamp statelessness out for good. https://t.co/QG9dTAnmuu

We cannot and must not forget the origins of modern international refugee law. These principles of opening our door to people fleeing war and persecution underpin global humanity and compassion, and the values we stand for. https://t.co/xOPJY71MZK

Damaging forms of nationalism and hate speech must be fought against and is corrosive for public debate. Extremism is on the rise. Fight back in support of refugees. This article shows the positive impact online activism can have. #WithRefugees https://t.co/V7aGkav7G5

Addressing humanitarian challenges cannot be left to a small handful of States alone. Vast majority of refugees live in neighbouring countries. Those countries need support+solidarity from the international community, +protection for refugees who move further in search of safety https://t.co/ls0NQwyiBA

Civilians should never be targetted in conflict. The perpetrators of this horrific attack should be held to account. Those in the international community with links to the warring parties must do more to stop the fighting. Dialogue is urgently needed to bring about peace. https://t.co/9Y3itfzThn

No one should be returned against their will. Returns must be voluntary and with fully informed consent. UNHCR does not believe that conditions in Burundi are conducive for returns, but we will help those who want to return to do so as safely as possible https://t.co/gdEcA0CpRk

"Damaging forms of nationalism+manipulation of anti-refugee+migrant sentiment, these are powerful currents internationally that risk putting progress into reverse" - @RefugeesChief No place for discrimination. Time to end statelessness once and for all https://t.co/FBs6qhfjyl

@LumpigsterLump EU State vessels and NGO search and rescue operations have saved thousands of lives in recent years. The work of NGO boats is vital, and should be supported by State operations similar to what we saw in the past.
