Increasing numbers including refugees are fleeing to the Americas Many put themselves in danger in the hands of smugglers and traffickers who promise false hope We need to reflect+see & find safe, legal pathways to asylum+migration so people don't take these dangerous journeys https://t.co/YI2jm2xfnu

Tragic reports coming in of a shipwreck off coast of Lampedusa.. 2 bodies already found dead. 22 rescued but suggestion of as many as 30 currently unaccounted for. Increased search and rescue capacity urgently needed! https://t.co/3mD4EzTKiW

3 months on from Tajoura airstrike, which took the lives of 53 people inside, refugees are STILL returned to detention centres after being intercepted by Libyan Coast Guard Use of detention centres must end. And no one should be brought back to Libya after being rescued at sea. https://t.co/pPyFn3E7E1

The myth of the PULL FACTOR must stop. In 2019, an average of 46.7 people attempted to leave Libya by boat when NGOs vessels were present. When NO NGO boats were at sea, the average was 47.4 per day (with thanks @emmevilla)

We need to do more to stop people attempting these dangerous boat journeys in the first place. We need safe, legal alternative pathways to access asylum in Europe. People should never feel they have no other choice than to put their lives in the hands of smugglers.

The CRUCIAL role of NGO search and rescue operations MUST be acknowledged. They have saved countless lives. They should not be criminalised nor penalised for their humanitarian efforts No arrests of crew. No seizure of boats. No denial of ports to dock.

There needs to a return to the seas of an EU State search and rescue operation. Naval assets alone are not enough. Previous naval missions in the past, such as Mare Nostrum, have saved thousands of lives and should return.

BLEAK MILESTONE For the 6th year in a row, more than 1,000 people have died attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea. Things must change. We must do more. Priority must be to save lives https://t.co/TACuMSxdua

@JFCrisp Any support to the Libyan Coast Guard should be conditional on people not being returned to detention after being rescued at sea
