Thank you Niger for continuing to host vulnerable refugees while they await further resettlement ? And thank you Switzerland for this vital lifeline. Urge other States to follow suit and offer more and faster resettlement places! https://t.co/6xp2rUfkWd

@JFCrisp That the majority of refugees are women and children bears repeating. To say otherwise would be to ignore the fact that in many circles, there’s a false narrative that almost all refugees are young, adult men (with all the associated implications)

To give context, last year 55,000 refugees were able to be resettled. There's 40,000 refugees currently in Libya. If all the refugees in Libya were resettled, there would be almost no places for vulnerable refugees from Syria, Iraq, Venezuela, DRC, etc... https://t.co/W7McyGGY4Z

In urban areas, refugees will be assisted with cash for food+shelter, relief items, medical care. More resources are needed for us to provide more support. https://t.co/W7McyGGY4Z

This is far from ideal. Understandable that many refugees are focused only on resettlement. However there simply aren't enough places made available by States. Less than 1% of refugees in need worldwide are able to be resettled. Simply, we need States to offer more places

STATEMENT: UNHCR to expand support to refugees in urban areas. Severe+unsustainable overcrowding at the Gathering and Departure Facility means it will slowly transition towards becoming an open centre, no longer a transit centre https://t.co/W7McyGGY4Z

Following spontaneous arrival of hundreds of former detainees, GDF is hosting 1,200 people, double it's capacity. UNHCR, UN agencies+partners are providing medical care, psycho-social support, hot meals+energy bars. But conditions are cramped+deteriorating https://t.co/W7McyGGY4Z

Now, we can't use GDF as transit centre. This means we can't use it to evacuate the most vulnerable refugees out of Libya to safety. This was previously a critical lifeline for refugees at risk. We hope GDF will eventually return to being a transit centre https://t.co/W7McyGGY4Z

Number of refugees UNHCR is able to resettle relies on number of places States make available There are simply not enough places for all. Less than 1% of refugees needing resettlement will find a place. Other more realistic options must also be an option https://t.co/Gp2ecdB6yB

Each day lost when humanitarian responders are on lockdown because of fighting amongst armed groups, the risk of Ebola spreading increases. https://t.co/4qP4TUKRzM
