A great display of solidarity with @refugees from Italy, Germany, France, Portugal, Romania, Malta & Luxembourg. There are seeds of hope for a more lasting and sustainable solution in these unified acts of compassion and humanity. https://t.co/3eQlOCMp7y

The rescued people on board @seawatch_intl are finally being allowed to disembark. Good news but it should never have gone so far. We cannot keep having boats stranded at sea for days on end. Political courage needed to establish a regional approach https://t.co/3eQlOCMp7y

Lastly, we need to stop the toxic tone of debate around @refugees Dehumanising language empowers their ill treatment. History has shown that going down this path does not an end well. Time for political leadership & courage to reject facts and falsehoods https://t.co/aqLN6OEHeg

We also need to address the root causes of why people to flee their homes. More must be done to put an end to existing conflicts and to prevent new ones. More development support is needed so people feel they have a viable chance of looking after themselves & their families

Europe & the West absolutely *has* the capacity to help. More than 85% of the world's @refugees are in developing & middle income countries. There is no crisis in Europe. More safe & legal pathways to safety for people fleeing war, violence & persecution are needed.

Any approach to the Mediterranean must include measures to stop people feeling such desperation that they take these journeys. More must be done to stop smugglers & those who profit on people's despair. The full force of the law should be used to hold them to account

Important to remember that reaching Europe is just the end of a nightmarish journey. In Libya, people face appalling conditions inside detention centres. Throughout their journey they face torture, rape & being sold as slaves by people smugglers

NGO boats, inc @seawatch_intl, @seaeyeorg, @SEENOTRETTUNG, @MV_LIFELINE & @openarms_found play a critical role saving lives at sea. Legal & logistical restrictions against their search & rescue operations must be lifted, saving lives has to be the priority https://t.co/aqLN6OEHeg

There IS a way forward. We need to have the courage & vision to look beyond the next boat, & implement a comprehensive approach that puts an end to these tragedies https://t.co/aqLN6OEHeg
