Everyone has the fundamental human right to seek asylum. This principle spans back millennia. It has saved lives. When people are fleeing war, violence & persecution, we open our doors to them in their time of need. It could one day be us. https://t.co/lIc617IsSS

Deplorable. Cutting civilians, including many children, off from water can not be justified. Inhumane. https://t.co/tuKiGnK3tw

Border security & protecting refugees are complementary goals. Providing refugees access to asylum prevents them from being driven in to the hands of smugglers and traffickers. Imposing restrictive border controls does little to enhance national security

@Caro50886110 @Refugees @UNHCRLibya @cochetel I’m sorry you feel that way. Which claims do you feel have been false? And where has the CG been vilified/host been aggravated?

Terribly sad news. No child should be held in detention. https://t.co/H2UjagZ7MG

@Caro50886110 @Refugees @UNHCRLibya @cochetel Caroline, there have to be States coming forward with offers of places for us to evacuate them to. We have been urging States to do this to get everyone at risk out of detention since the situation deteriorated.

@TilleyMarc the overriding problem is the toxicity of the rhetoric and the stigmatization of refugees & migrants for political gain. No need for ambiguity that Libya is not a 'place of safety' and people rescued at sea are in distress

A "shipmaster has an obligation to render assistance to those in distress at sea without regard to nationality, status or circumstances in which they are found. This is a longstanding maritime tradition & an obligation enshrined in international law" https://t.co/7ASjYBen2w

Around 5,000 people are trapped inside detention centres in Libya. 25% of them are children. Imagine if it was your child stuck in there. Evacuate all of them now! https://t.co/6mbcb350Lo
