Sober discussion needed today on what comes next. This is a humanitarian issue, not a political trophy. Rescued passengers should be allowed to dock. NGOs should not be penalised for rescue. No one country should be left with responsibility for hosting the passengers https://t.co/WRw5xQIhYS

@alarm_phone @UNmigration @Refugees UNHCR provided immediate humanitarian & medical assistance, & explained the legal options available to them. However, all of the passengers made clear they did not want to seek asylum in Tunisia.

Rescue at sea is a centuries old tradition, + obligation under the law of the sea. Rescued passengers should be taken to the nearest safe port. We cannot penalise people for abiding by these obligations. If we weaken this principle, we will put future lives at risk.

Sad that a captain is pushed to point where she feels she has no choice other than to immediately dock rescued passengers, regardless of consequences for her. It should never have come to this. Dismantling smuggling networks MUST go hand in hand with strengthening search & rescue capacity. That means giving boats somewhere to dock. Rescue is not complete til people reached safety on dry land https://t.co/nhDQWf7HSX
