Libyan detentions centres are no place for refugees rescued at sea. System of arbitrary detention must end, centres closed and the detainees released in a safe, orderly manner. Support for Libyan instituons involved in sea rescue should be conditional on the centres being closed https://t.co/YurZhdK2nd

@GiuliaRastajuly Very sad, their frustrations are completely understandable, conditions inside detention are appalling. UNHCR is evacuating people, but the needs far outstrip available places. Int’l community must offer more places+faster processes to help us get more people out of harm’s way

@migratorymel Absolutely, needs a holistic approach that includes evacuations, resettlement, development support+strengthening of asylum systems in counties of 1st asylum/transit, + efforts to address root causes of why people move. Sea journey is the (too often fatal) last leg of the journey

@mahligdeleon @SARwatchMED Yes, this is true. But the Libyan search and rescue zone stretches some 100 nautical miles from Libyan shores. The LCG lack sufficient capacity to have sole responsibility for search and rescue. And thank you, ?, I will pass your kind words to colleagues, who did far more

@mahligdeleon @SARwatchMED Yes, the priority is to save lives. But no one should be returned to Libya after being rescued at sea. Intensifying fighting, widespread human rights abuses, routine use of detention for those returned, just some of the reasons why it’s not safe for returns.

A number or boats departing from Libya, and then being returned back. Libya is not safe for refugees, and rescued refugees should not be returned there. More search and rescue boats needed to rescue people at sea+prevent returns to Libya. https://t.co/wK54EKhPHA
