More than 1,500 people have died this year attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea. NGO boats play a vital role in performing search & rescue operations. Their services are vital to saving the lives of men, women & children in distress at sea. https://t.co/7uZw7tOB46

Asylum-seekers in Libya face torture & detention, according to widespread reports. Not currently a safe place for returns. Urgent need for for a regional arrangement from other States on both sides of the Mediterranean basin. https://t.co/WVCOOZ2S9t

This is exactly what must be avoided. When shipmasters fear they won't be able to dock rescued passengers, some may choose not to respond to distress calls. A regional arrangement with predictable docking points urgently needed https://t.co/pC6LW4gh7b

@JFCrisp Any efforts to prevent deaths at sea is welcome. Already in 2018 1,500+ people have died attempting to cross, so stronger search & rescue capacity is needed. But this has to go hand in hand with strengthening protection & solutions for refugees & migrants who *are* in Libya

@JFCrisp The situation on Mediterranean & in Libya is highly complex, no quick fix. Needs a comprehensive solution involving states on both sides of Med basin. Refugees need access to safety & protection, we will always advocate & work towards that. Saving lives has to be top priority.

@JFCrisp We do not support returns to Libya currently because of volatile security situation, reports of human rights violations & routine use of detention for those returned. We're calling for states to establish no. of clear & predictable docking points at appropriate ports of safety.

Many South Sudanese refugees have been displaced 2, 3, and some even 4 times before the last time they arrived in Uganda. When I spoke with them, many were tired of constantly having to flee and only wanted to return once they knew things would remain stable. https://t.co/fibaB5jSEo

This again underlines the crucial importance of having all those with capacity to do so allowed to conduct search and rescue. Saving lives must be the priority. @SOSMedIntl https://t.co/8CPZhPvcl4
