.@CNN language matters. Asylum-seekers are people, who are often fleeing incredible traumas and seeking safety from war, violence and persecution. To say Police are 'hunting' asylum-seekers is completely dehumanising and feeds into a toxic narrative. https://t.co/WUakahANux

When survival is the primary motivation, closing doors simply does not work. Close a door and people will open a window, close the window and people will dig a tunnel. Safe & legal pathways to access asylum in Europe needed to prevent people falling victim to human traffickers

@JFCrisp @DariaDavitti The first priority has to be saving lives at sea. Any one capable of doing that should do so & should be supported. At the same time, we have a non-returns advisory for Libya, but saving people's lives *has* to come first.

People's lives should never be instrumentalised for political gain. This is not what Europe stands for. The Diciotti passengers must be allowed to disembark immediately. People's lives are not pawns for political games of chess on who can take the least responsibility

"Time has come to end the back-and-forth that has seen countries compete in a race to the bottom on who can take least responsibility for people. It is dangerous & immoral to put lives of asylum-seekers at risk while States engage in political tug-of-war on long-term solutions"

“Coming out of the horrors of the Second World War, Europeans were amongst some of the key architects of the 1951 Refugee Convention, which has enshrined in international law the fundamental human right to seek asylum,” - @RefugeesChief

UNHCR's @RefugeesChief - put humanity first, allow Diciotti passengers to dock, allow political discussions later but not at expense of human lives https://t.co/hiCCdr7UMP
