BREAKING: 350 survivors of the Tajoura airstrike, that killed 50+ detainees, have been freed. They're no longer trapped in a prison that put them directly in harm's way. UNHCR is providing them with support through our urban progamme.

Please watch this moving animation on the Mediterranean. No more refugee souls should be lost at sea. - Remove restrictions on NGO boats - resume European State vessels doing search+rescue - more pathways to asylum in Europe to stop people getting on boats in the first place https://t.co/vXLYyJXgHJ

"We cannot be responsible for boats with people rescued from shipwrecks on board spending weeks on the Mediterranean because they can't find a port" Thank you @realSeehoferIM, this is right. Boat by boat approach stranding ppl at sea for days must stop https://t.co/ImUGMl3ZIz

Such an approach should include reinforced capacities for search and rescue on the Mediterranean. State vessels in the past saved countless lives. They should return. Role of Libyan Coast Guard should be limited if it means refugees are then returned to Libya.

Time for politics to be taken out of the issue and for sober discussions to lead the way. Arrivals are down significantly but refugees are dying trapped in detention in Libya. A fair, coordinated State effort is the way forward

Governments of Italy and Malta call on EU to stop boat by boat approach to Med and adopt ‘structured, permanent mechanism.’ Welcome move. UNHCR has called for a predictable, fair system for more than a year https://t.co/EO0CTWEARF

@rgowans Not unjustified. Their rescue prevented people being returned to detention centres in Libya. Great and vital work from @RescueMed

@shatzomer @JFCrisp Because our first and immediate priority is to be provide humanitarian assistance to people who need it. Save lives first, political discussions later.

@JFCrisp In my opinion, very irresponsible to run this quote without proper context. It is not up to UNHCR if +when people are evacuated, we rely on States to provide evacuation places. We have consistently called for all refugees to be released + evacuated from Libya.
