While the passengers of the Aquarius were being disembarked in Valencia, Spanish rescue services saved more than 1,000 lives at sea during the weekend. Sadly, around 50 missing or dead. Absolutely vital that principle of saving lives at sea is protected!

This is an unsustainable situation. This can't keep happening every time a boat rescues people at sea. Enough finger-pointing. Time for solidarity, responsibility-sharing, and humanity. https://t.co/o8UkmKC9g2

Saving lives HAS to come first. Discussions on developing clear, predictable responsibility-sharing can & should happen, AFTER the rescue of people in distress at sea. https://t.co/1ehZEDAYsq

Europe should be taking a lead. Vast, vast majority of refugees and asylum-seekers in the world are in developing countries. Countries with the broadest shoulders should take on more of the responsibility. https://t.co/OP1481fkQC

The decision about which country bears responsibility cannot be determined simply by geographic location. Countries from the EU, a union of shared values, need to come forward in solidarity and share responsibility with countries at the front-line of receiving new arrivals https://t.co/9lJP5kK47d

Rescue at sea and saving lives MUST remain sacrosanct....and that can't happen without clear, predictable and fair disembarkation mechanisms. Greater cooperation needed among states, can't be left to countries to deal with on their own! https://t.co/o8UkmKC9g2

No one country can be expected to handle refugee situations alone. A Europe-wide response is needed that shares responsibility in a fair and co-operative manner. Responsibility-sharing not responsibility-shifting.

.@RefugeesChief Filippo Grandi calls on European states to come together to develop fair and coherent asylum policies https://t.co/JDQla8i4s9

.@RefugeesChief Grandi warns that race by states to work alone in developing new restrictions risks harming refugees, and Europe itself. Europe was founded on principles of solidarity based on human rights. These principles makes us stronger!
