Today, speaking with my UNHCR colleagues in Afghanistan, I heard stories of uncertainty and fear, for sure, but also of courage and determination. I assured them that UNHCR will stay in Afghanistan, and continue to support Afghan women and men, as we have done for over 40 years.

The international community is talking about leaving Afghanistan. Surely, the situation is risky and dramatic, but as long and wherever it is possible to stay and help Afghan women and men at their time of greatest need, that should be the priority.

More and more Afghans are fleeing their homes. The number of displaced people is growing in and outside the country. A solution to the conflict is urgently needed. Otherwise massive forced displacement will be just one of the grave humanitarian consequences of political failure.

“No Contracting State shall expel or return a refugee to the frontiers of territories where his life or freedom would be threatened on account of his race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion.” The Refugee Convention is 70 today.
