On #InternationalWomensDay we urge the world to step up to help protect the rights and lives of refugee, displaced and stateless women and girls. Gender inequality is everyone’s problem.

From rising domestic violence, child marriages, trafficking and sexual exploitation, we are seeing some of the worst manifestations of gender inequality arising for refugee women and girls, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. https://t.co/vL1he6T0tu

We also welcome the recently announced termination of the Asylum Cooperation Agreements between the US, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador which posed protection risks as well as the possibility of chain refoulement.

Guatemala is a country of origin, transit and asylum for people forced to flee their homes. It is making significant effort to welcome those who need protection by establishing a new asylum unit to receive, process and adjudicate claims. https://t.co/PXDF9jvGlk

Colombia is host to 1.7M displaced Venezuelans. To help further protect them, it will now grant them 10 year Temporary Protection Status. This will secure their rights, access to services and health care. This is a remarkable example of solidarity, leadership and generosity. https://t.co/LJPKDURTJw

Last week we warned that we had reached the lowest refugee resettlement levels in recent history. Today, however, we look forward with optimism, knowing that the US resettlement program will be fully restored. Thank you to the United States for standing with refugees. https://t.co/SzSFeTNuC4

Only 3 per cent of refugees have access to higher education globally. We know that education at all levels is life-changing and can help equip refugees with the knowledge and skills they need to live productive and independent lives. https://t.co/YvBbc6BU94

To prevent human rights violations at borders, ensure access to asylum for those who need it, and accountability, we advocate for national independent monitoring mechanisms. Independent monitoring is also proposed by the EU Pact and we urge EU Member States to support this.

International and EU law requires countries to protect the right of people to seek asylum - even if they enter irregularly. Respecting human lives and refugee rights is not a choice, it is a legal and moral obligation.

I am alarmed by the increasing reports of expulsions and pushbacks at Europe's land and sea borders. Boats carrying refugees are being towed back. People are being rounded-up and sent back to sea. Many have reported violence and abuse by state forces.   https://t.co/Cm84GyNbR4
