It is a terrible indictment of the world we live in, that new conflicts are erupting while others continue unabated. The numbers of people forced to flee mounts every year. This trend can be reversed only by a new, concerted global push towards peace.

"Whoever. Wherever. Whenever. Everyone has the right to seek safety" This is UNHCR's theme for #WorldRefugeeDay this year - a message as important and relevant as ever. It was great to discuss this and the state of global refugee protection with @ImogenFoulkes here in Geneva. https://t.co/JXJxDxCsWc https://t.co/xvPVyiicXY

We've had fruitful discussions in Canada on expanding resettlement and other regular pathways for refugees in Central America and Mexico. These solutions are critical in helping protect those displaced and at-risk, and easing pressures on refugee host countries. #MIRPS https://t.co/HVK5bUxQSh

The number of people who have been #forcedtoflee their homes has now crossed the staggering milestone of 100 million for the first time on record. This alarming figure is a wake-up call on the need for more action to promote peace and prevent and resolve forced displacement. https://t.co/bqQ7GOhFIG

Covid-19 is no excuse to ignore the law and refugees. The right to seek asylum and the prohibition of returns to danger are central tenets of international law - which also prohibit states from rejecting asylum seekers at borders.

20 countries in the world today deny access to asylum on the pretext of responding to the pandemic - ultimately denying safety and protection to people fleeing wars and persecution, and in contravention of international law. https://t.co/XA0n0wzbdy

This week 36 cities around the world have pledged to implement the Global Compact on Refugees. This is hugely significant –cities and local communities are often at the fore in hosting refugees and forcibly displaced people. We welcome these commitments and hope more will follow!
