Ioannina embraces inclusivity

Description
The city of Ioannina, in northwest Greece, is working with local refugees, UNHCR and other partners to promote inclusion by helping refugee residents to engage with the host community. In October 2019, the city established its first Refugees and Migrants Integration Council to act as an advisory board to strengthen the integration of refugees and migrants into the local community. Ioannina’s council includes six representatives of the Municipal Council and five representatives of the Arab, Afghan and African refugee communities, as well as alternate members. The initiative is strongly supported by Ioannina’s mayor, Moses Elisaf, who was elected in June 2019 and is the first Jewish mayor to be elected in Greece.
