A city once in ruins welcomes refugees back home as they flee fighting in Sudan

Malakal was once the second-largest city in South Sudan, a bustling port on the White Nile River. But when a fierce conflict broke out in 2013, many residents fled their homes and sought safety across the borders to Sudan. Now they are returning as war ravages parts of the country that gave them refuge. Sudan has been at war since fighting broke out in the capital Khartoum in April 2023. Millions have fled across the region and internally as the world's largest humanitarian crisis continues to unfold. From South Sudan's port city Malakal, to Sudan, and then back again - many have been forced to flee multiple times. Now, returning to a home that is itself is struggling to revive itself.
