North West Syria - one year after the earthquakes

One year has passed since a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Türkiye and Syria on 6 February, unleashing nearly 14,000 aftershocks. It was one of the most devastating natural disasters in the region, impacting around 8.8 million people in Syria. Some 6,000 deaths and more than 12,000 injuries were reported in the whole of Syria. The earthquakes had a significant impact on northwest Syria where at least 96 communities and 35 sub-districts; more than 10,600 buildings were partially or completely destroyed. As a result, more than 108,000 people were displaced, over 4,500 people died and more than 10,400 were injured in north-west Syria.
