Baseball club brings a bit of home to Venezuelan refugee and migrant children in Peru

In a country where most people play soccer, a baseball training club in Lima gives young Venezuelans a second chance at their dreams of one day going professional. In San Juan de Lurigancho, Entreno Los Astros, a baseball training club led by Venezuelan coach, Juan Carlos Urquilla is bringing the well-loved sport to refugee and migrant children. The club receives uniforms, equipment and other support from UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. It started in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, after another Venezuelan in Lima started taking his son out to the park to practice. Other Venezuelans started to join them and the father started a small training club. Los Astros grew through word-of-mouth and gained popularity from posts on social media. Now, dozens of kids take part in the club, paying a small monthly fee to join the practice sessions. Most of the members are Venezuelans but there are a handful of Peruvian children also in the club, as curiosity about the sport continues to grow.
