Established in 1954, the UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award is presented each year to an individual, group or organization who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to protect or assist forcibly displaced or stateless people. Since 2017, UNHCR has also recognized several regional winners each year. Abdullah Habib, Sahat Zia Hero, Salim Khan, and Shahida Win are the joint 2023 Asia & the Pacific Regional Winners of the UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award. Their transformative work as photographers and human rights advocates amplifies the voices of marginalized communities that often go unheard. Their own lived experience as refugees and stateless people has shaped their unique perspective, fueling their commitment to tell stories that portray their community’s narratives with dignity, accuracy and respect. They utilize various forms of content creation to share essential information within their community and are dedicated to empowering young people to have a voice that carries beyond the refugee camps to the rest of the world. As photographers, they have harnessed the power of visual storytelling to shine a light on the lives of people forced to flee.
