Established in 1954, the UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award is presented each year to an individual, group or organization who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to protect or assist forcibly displaced or stateless people. Since 2017, UNHCR has also recognized several regional winners each year. Philanthropists Lena Grochowska and Władysław Grochowski are the Europe Regional Winner of the 2023 UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award. Their charitable work has made an indelible impact on thousands of refugees by providing them with essential support, including shelter, access to livelihoods, and social inclusion. The couple are also vocal advocates for tolerance and humanitarian ideals. They have helped rally the business community and civil society to support the people affected and impacted by forced displacement. They launched their foundation in 2014 to provide support and assistance to people of Polish origin returning to Poland, often after several generations, from countries, mainly in Central Asia, of the former Soviet Union. Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, they initiated a free emergency accommodation programme that has provided approximately 310,000 nights of free lodging to refugees from Ukraine. The foundation’s approach to social and economic inclusion is centered on highly vulnerable individuals, including refugees with disabilities.
