Elizabeth Moreno Barco is the 2023 UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award winner for the Americas

Established in 1954, the UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award is presented each year to an individual, group or organization who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to protect or assist forcibly displaced or stateless people. Since 2017, UNHCR has also recognized several regional winners each year. Elizabeth Moreno Barco is the 2023 Americas Regional Winner for the UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award. As a a human rights advocate and peace builder, she has bettered the lives of people affected and displaced by conflict in Colombia, particularly women and children, Afro-Colombians, indigenous groups, and internally displaced people. One of her most significant contributions is her courageous stance against the abuses committed by armed actors targeting civilians. Her work for peace has taken many forms, from burying victims of violence and protecting children from exploitation to participating in peace talks with rebels and advocating for the state to meet its responsibilities to the Afro-Colombian people of the San Juan River region.
