This family escaped conflict in DRC. What happened next?

Description
Chancelline and her familly are among thousands of Congolese refugees in Burundi relocated to safe settlements away from the border after they fled unrest at home. At the border, the family had to cross the Rusizi river – 300 metres wide with fast-moving currents - to make it into Burundi. Stories of children drowning, and people’s property being washed away didn’t deter her. She found people who helped her cross the river on a boat, with her children. The 26-year-old struggled to find a place at the Rugombo stadium, a few kilometers from the border, where tens of thousands of families have sought shelter. A Burundian family took them in, sharing the little resources they had with them. Over 70,000 people have crossed into Burundi since January 2025, the largest influx the country has experienced in decades. Most families are in Rugombo, in the north, and are sheltering in crowded conditions at a sports Stadium. This year alone, escalating conflict across eastern DRC has displaced more than 400,000. Persistent clashes continue to terrorize civilians, mired by human rights violations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Information for media: If you would like to use this video to communicate refugee stories or require B-Roll, transcripts, stills or much more information, please visit our media page: https://media.unhcr.org UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency, works to protect and assist those fleeing war and persecution.
