Fleeing the Syrian crisis in 2012, Abdullah and his family sought asylum in Egypt. Shortly after, Abdullah and his brother decided to capitalize on their family’s generation-old sweet-making legacy and start a business in Egypt’s 6th October City, where a high concentration of Syrian refugees reside. Now proud owners of a small factory and two shops, the family’s secret recipes not only brought a piece of Damascus to nostalgic Syrians, but also teased the taste buds of Egyptians.
