Water Lilies & Canoes: South Sudanese women hardest hit by flooding, find a way.
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency
Description
Every year, South Sudan is swept into a season of severe flooding. In recent weeks, rising waters have submerged vast areas in Jonglei, Upper Nile, and Unity State, displacing 100,000 people, many of whom have already been forced to flee their homes due to renewed conflict since February 2025. Displaced communities are in some of the country’s most flood and conflict-prone states and are exposed to a double crisis. Last year, we met Nyariaka Riek in Bentiu. She had lost everything to flooding but was finding a way to rebuild, together with other women in her community. UNHCR-provided canoes to help the women to safely gather water lily buds for food and to help keep a vulnerable community moving. You can help communities hardest hit by flooding.
