Barham Salih meets Syrian refugees in Zaatari

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Barham Salih, visited Zaatari camp, where he met with refugees who have been displaced for more than a decade and still cling to hope. Jordan continues to stand by the refugees despite the growing pressures, while international solidarity remains an urgent necessity more than ever before. I am here in Zaatari refugee camp where the Jordanian government received the first waves of Syrian refugees as they fled the carnage in their country, looking for safety 14 years ago. For years, Jordan has generously hosted hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees. After the fall of the Assad government a year ago, hope was rekindled that these refugees and these people in displacement and their tragedies, would come to an end. Most refugees I spoke to here today, told me they eventually want to go back but they want to make sure they are safe, and they can make a living when they return, send their children to school and have access to basic services. For years, Jordan has generously hosted hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees. Nearly 180,000 of them have voluntarily returned to Syria with support from UNHCR. But nearly 440,000 Syrian refugees remain in Jordan, and they still need assistance and protection. We call on the international community to maintain their contributions to the refugees and Jordan to continue shouldering responsibility with host countries like Jorda, making sure that the refugees are offered what they deserve, protection and opportunity and to make the journey home voluntarily and in peace and in dignity.
