Venezuelan with HIV receives treatment in Ecuador

José * arrived from Venezuela in December 2018, during the Christmas holidays. Leaving his country was his only option. He has HIV and was being treated with expired retroviral, so his health was at risk. In addition, he was a victim of discrimination and violence because he belonged to the LGBTI community. When he arrived in Ecuador, initially it was very difficult to find a job and access treatment. When he arrived in Ibarra, he was taken to the hospital because his defenses were very low. At the hospital, found out about UNHCR's work and decided to go to the offices to ask for help. UNHCR staff referred him to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs so that he could seek asylum and is now assessing him during the process. In addition, he currently receives psychosocial help from HIAS, UNHCR’s partner and has access to the appropriate treatment for his illness.
