Nearly 2 million Afghans have returned home in 2025 – many under duress – creating chaotic conditions at the border, challenges with communities in areas of return, and worsening an already acutely under-funded humanitarian crisis. Grandi visited the Islam Qala border crossing with Iran. There, he met uprooted returnee families who are among the tens of thousands of Afghans to have streamed into the country since mid-June this year.
