The Global Compact on Refugees, was affirmed by the General Assembly in the morning of 17 December following two years of engagement and consultation, represents a milestone in international cooperation to strengthen refugee responses. It will change the lives of refugees and their hosts. This event provided an opportunity to welcome the affirmation of the compact and look forward to its implementation. The event featured high-level speakers and include remarks by a refugee, Bertine Bahige. Bertine is a Congolese refugee resettled to the Baltimore, Maryland. Bertine received a scholarship to the University of Wyoming, where he resides. He was a math teacher upon graduation and was awarded Teacher of the Year. Since then, he has become a school principal.
