One year after the fall of the Assad regime, 3 million Syrians have returned home

One year after the fall of the Assad regime in Syria, millions of Syrians have returned home, marking a major step toward recovery, peace and stability. This includes 1.2 million people returning from neighbouring countries and 1.9 million internally displaced people going back to their original homes. This historic moment offers a real chance to help end one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, but urgent international support is needed to sustain the momentum. UNHCR is facilitating voluntary, informed and dignified returns by providing cash assistance, transportation, counselling and help with documentation. Neighbouring countries, including Jordan, Lebanon, Türkiye and Egypt, have seen large numbers of Syrians returning with UNHCR’s support. But returns must remain voluntary. Conditions in Syria are still fragile, with damaged infrastructure, limited services, unexploded ordnance and major economic challenges. UNHCR is also supporting returnees with shelter repairs, relief items, winter assistance, legal aid, child protection, GBV prevention and opportunities to earn a living. But the $1.5 billion appeal for Syria is only 33% funded, threatening essential services for returnees, refugees and host communities. Around 4.5 million Syrian refugees remain in neighbouring countries, and host countries still require substantial support. The Syrian Government holds the primary responsibility to create a secure, rights-based environment that sustains voluntary returns.
