The number of asylum seekers in Mexico has grown considerably in recent years. According to official figures from the Mexican Commission for Refugee Aid (COMAR), during 2019, 70,422 people applied for asylum in Mexico. Many of these people came from Honduras, El Salvador and Venezuela. The COMAR simplified its procedures by applying the Cartagena Declaration’s refugee definition. The procedure includes an interview based on a presumption of eligibility, legal analysis and issuance of resolution. Making the process more agile, efficient with more quality and achieving that by 2020, 13,000 people were recognized as refugees under this procedure, according to official COMAR figures. This practice proves the benefits of implementing differentiated processing of cases, in response to the significant increase in asylum applications.
