Description
Since 2012, Argentina has a public legal defense program for asylum seekers, refugees and stateless persons. Through a specialized commission, the Office of the Federal Public Defender General, provides legal advice and representation at all stages of the asylum process, immigration procedures assistance, legal sponsorship in citizenship procedures and legal representation for unaccompanied or separated children. In the last five years, it intervened in more than 5,000 new asylum applications, 2,300 challenged actions, 700 citizenship applications, and represented 149 children on asylum procedures. It has strengthened protection mechanisms and raised the standards of the asylum system.
