Good Practices on Asylum in the Americas: Ecuador - Electronic visas
ACNUR La Agencia de la ONU para los Refugiados
Description
Since March 2020, the Government of Ecuador replaced paper-issued visas with an electronic version that can be digitally verified. Humanitarian visas are an example of these new visas which are granted to asylum-seekers and recognized refugees. When authorities received a refugee claim, they send the visa to the e-mail address provided by the applicant so that they can download it and keep it on their mobile phone or print it. The electronic visa contains the main biodata and contains a verification code that allows the holder to share it with other institutions in order to confirm its validity. The issuance of the electronic visa is a simple, agile and inexpensive mechanism that guarantees access to documentation, provides protection against refoulement and facilitates access to rights for refugees in Ecuador.
