Global Trends Report 2017: Over half of the world's refugees are children

Wars, other violence and persecution drove worldwide forced displacement to a new high in 2017 for the fifth year in a row. UNHCR’s annual Global Trends Report shows that 68.5 million people were displaced at the end of 2017. Over 16 million people were newly displaced during the course of the year. Children below 18 years of age constituted about half of the refugee population in 2017, up from 41 per cent in 2009.
