Description
As of December 2022, Nigeria hosts approximately 93,000 refugees and asylum seekers. The majority are Cameroonian refugees from Anglophone regions of Cameroon, 51 percent being children. About 7,000 are urban refugees/asylum-seekers living in urban areas in over 25 different States in Nigeria. Nigeria is a party to all international and regional refugee and human rights instruments relevant to the protection of refugees without reservations, notably the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol and the 1969 OAU Convention. The Government of Nigeria is fully committed to the Global Compact on Refugees (GCR), which strives to complement humanitarian responses by increasingly engaging development actors to advance more long-term sustainable socio-economic interventions and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for displaced populations, their host communities and national institutions responding to displacement situations.
