Every year many children and families are forced to flee their homes. For countless children, often their only option is to be smuggled across borders. The routes passing through Libya are incredibly dangerous. Children are abused and exploited, and many die making these desperate voyages. “You will travel three days in the Sahara and lose your direction. Our brothers who fall and die of thirst, you just leave them there’’ says Kidane from Eritrea. Families often end up paying a ransom for the release of their children. Arsema, 16 years old: “I have been raped by the smugglers and I have seen girls who were traveling to Libya with me being raped.”
