(1) Human Trafficking Nigeria | A returnee from Libya shares his story
Telling the Real Story
Description
Happy Otoide was at the brink of opening another shop in Nigeria when he was approached by a trafficker who offered him what seemed like a better idea – the journey to Europe through Libya. According to the trafficker, the journey would take ONLY two weeks and would cost less money than opening another shop. Happy was unaware of the risks of such jouney, neither did it occur to him that, the further he would move away from Nigeria, the more vulnerable he would become to kidnapping – a key strategy used by human traffickers whereby upon reaching Libya, the families of victims are called to demand a ransom. Since the launch of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) voluntary return programme, thousands of Nigerians have been brought back home since April 2017 after facing torture, abuse, and exploitation in Libya. Happy Otoide is one of them, and has a key message to share from real life experience. Listen and share!
