Amir was 20 years old and had his whole life ahead of him before everything fell apart. Armed men attacked his village, forcing him to flee on foot to a nearby town. Desperate to leave for safety and find work, Amir followed a friend’s advice and sought the help of a smuggler, who sold him the lie of an easy journey to Europe. After the boat he took from Libya breaks down and he is taken to a detention centre, Amir regrets trusting his friend and reflects on the suffering he caused his parents.
