Janet’s story: Forced into prostitution through black magic (Part 1)
Telling the Real Story
Description
Janet's story Part I: Nowhere to go Janet fled her home in a Nigerian village when she was 12 because her stepmother treated her badly. She was doing odd jobs on farms for a while and then moved to town, where she worked as a nanny. One day Janet met a woman who said her sister would give her a job in a supermarket in South Africa. She would get the job on condition that she go through a black magic ceremony, putting her under a spell that would make her mad if she ran away from the job. Janet agreed, went through the ceremony and departed on the journey. Being an uneducated person, she had no idea of geography, and it was only when reaching Libya that she realised she was being taken to Europe and not South Africa. The journey through the desert was hell, she and her female companions were ambushed and raped by bandits. Having finally arrived in Italy, Janet was contacted by a person who said she was the sister of the woman in Nigeria who had sent her off. They met and the woman explained that the only work available was steeet prostitution. Janet protested but felt compelled to give in because she was afraid of the magic spell. After three months of prostituting herself, Janet had had enough, fled from the woman and went to Germany. She has decided to tell her story to warn other vulnerable women in Nigeria who are in danger of being seduced into prostitution. Telling the Real Story is an information campaign to raise awareness about the dangers involved in using the smuggling route, including through Libya. The campaign is targeting people in different countries who are planning to undertake this dangerous journey. The Telling the Real Story campaign also aims at providing information on complementary pathways as alternative and regular opportunities to irregular movement (i.e. scholarships, family reunification, labour mobility).
