“I was with my child, we walked. There were all kinds of animals, hyenas, snakes. I was expecting it but having a child with me made it more difficult and stressful. Later, they brought me a donkey. I kept falling and getting up again, but the journey went on.” Says Netsenet Natsenet, her husband Meron and her daughter took the dangerous journey to Egypt from Sudan, to get to Europe. Prior to that, they were smuggled to Egypt in the hope of reaching Europe (via Libya), but decided to stay in Egypt, realizing the dangers that lay ahead. To this date, despite the life threatening situation in Libya, many are still traveling to and through the country in the hope of getting to Europe. More than 46,000 refugees and asylum-seekers are currently registered in Libya, where many face life-threatening situations in detention centers in Libya and in the hands of traffickers.
